My friends all give me a hard time because I’m always forwarding them emails with “what to do this weekend” and “lets go do this!” subject lines. Since moving to Washington D.C., I’ve made it my mission to explore and enjoy every last bit of this city. While I’ve done and seen a lot there is still SO much I haven’t found. Regardless, here are a few of my fun and fantastic people, places, things, events, etc. for the summer - just in case you need something to do one night!
Tonight, Brian and I are heading out to Carter Barron Amphitheater with Ryan and Susan for the Shakespeare Company’s Free for All shows. Once a year (usually around Memorial Day) the Co. offers about a week of free shows at Carter Barron and this year it’s Hamlet. Whenever I’m here, I find myself looking around surrounded by the beauty that is Rock Creek Park and forgetting that I’m still in the District!
For some reason, James Bond is the theme for two outdoor movies festivals this summer. Every Monday night from May to September you can catch a different Bond flick in Crystal City. If Monday isn’t good for you, head down the street to Gateway Park in Rosslyn for another James Bond moviefest! The schedule for DC’s Screen on the Green on the National Mall isn’t up yet, but should be soon!
If you want to do the monument thing, make sure you check out Roosevelt Island and enjoy some of the natural beauty that appears here and there throughout the city. In the same vein, a little farther out of town you can visit Lurray Caverns and head back via Skyline Drive or stop at some of Virginia’s wineries.
There’s the Northern Virginia Brewfest and the National Capital Barbecue Battle. Jazz in the National Gallery of Art’s Sculpture Garden and more free music in Eastern Market! The possibilities are really endless! So much to do, so little time! You better get started!
